The beginning of the year is always a good time to reflect on your business and personal progress over the past year. Aside from your personal promises of never over indulging again, how often have you said to yourself in a business context ‘We won’t let that happen again’ only for the same mistake or thing to happen the following week? At The Printed Image we are constantly looking at improving our offerings, ourselves and our processes for delivering to clients. Having reflected on 2017, we have documented the goals we as a team are working to. There might be something useful here that strikes a chord for you and helps you increase your own business success in the new year. So, we’ve jotted down our top 5 goals to share with you.
1) Learn how to delegate and do more of it
We are all guilty of trying to do too much ourselves, but teamwork really does make the dream work. No one person can do everything and if they try, they become too tired, frazzled and have no time to do anything else! Trust the team around you to deliver on their tasks and responsibilities. Whether that be your internal team or your partners and suppliers, clear direction and a good roadmap will ensure great results!
2) Promote your business regularly and consistently
In small businesses particularly, ‘marketing’ can seem like an effort, something you invest in a couple of times a year. Keeping your business top of mind for prospects and customers is critical when you want to grow revenues, and let’s face it, who doesn’t want to do that?! Regular company and brand presence in the channels your customers expect to encounter you are necessary. For impact, interrupt the status quo, communicate in unexpected ways but keep your brand or company message consistent. This consistent message is your best sales tool.
3) Set aside time for business planning at regular intervals
Planning gives you the opportunity to stop and evaluate what worked and what didn’t work. It helps you set new directions or reset your goals. The blue chips are adept at this and in their world, business or strategy planning happens as often as lunchtime! In the SME world, it’s typically a less frequent occurrence, we’ve come to realise once a quarter is not enough. Set aside time each week to review, adjust, and look forward for the company as a whole and each department.
Not only will this help you avoid costly mistakes and stay on track, but you’ll feel more focused and relaxed, confident you are doing the right things.
4) Drop what’s not working and move on.
All products or services aren’t going to be in demand forever. All sales methods aren’t going to work for everyone, and all suppliers or partners aren’t forever going to be ideally suited to your business. If a method, or a product, or a business relationship isn’t working for you, stop using it. Don’t invest a lot of energy into trying to make the unworkable workable. Move on and quickly.
5) Keep your business focussed on being client centric
This is the most important for us! Without our clients, there is no business… simple! Keeping in tune with your clients’ needs and developing offerings that deliver value to them is critical for any business. Ongoing dialogue about their world, the parameters they have to work to and the dynamics at play in their marketplace all contribute to your understanding of them and your ability to deliver on their needs. In today’s world mere delivery is not enough, you need to excite, engage and exceed your clients’ expectations.
All of this is much easier said than done, we know. We’re off to put the best foot forward into January and for the rest of 2018. Best of luck to you in doing the same!
